Hall of Flags Visit February 10, 2010

In the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, a small contingent from Houlton/ Hodgdon 29/70 Adult Education left the parking lot of the Houlton Higher Education Center. Making one stop in Island Falls to pick up another member, the group’s destination was our state’s capital, Augusta, and the Adult Education Hall of Flags Event. What is the Hall of Flags Event? It is an opportunity for adult education in Maine to showcase what services are provided for our state’s citizens to members of our state’s legislature. It is also an opportunity for our legislative representatives and governor to hear from adult education students exactly how adult education programming has helped them personally. Tables were set up in the Rotunda representing College Transitions, Vocational Training, Correctional Education, GED and High School Diploma completion, Literacy Volunteers of Maine, Citizenship and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) training, and Adult Basic Education. It is a chance for adult education students from every corner of the state to meet each other and share their stories. (Picture left, group meeting with Senator Roger Sherman)

The trip to Augusta also serves another purpose. It allows students to see our state legislature at work. Our group had an opportunity to tour the House and Senate Chambers, chat with our legislators, visit committee meetings in progress, and meet legislative aides who help citizens with issues they may be having. Holiday Learning Center Activity

On Wednesday, December 16, 2009, Houlton/Hodgdon SAD 29/70 Adult Education open learning center students worked with Linda Trickey, nutrition associate, for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Eat Well Nutrition Education Program. The students participated in a "Gifts in a Jar" activity. Gingerbread cookie and hot cocoa ingredients were mixed by students and carefully packed into canning jars and mugs and artfully decorated for gift giving during the holidays. A wonderful time was had by all who participated. More nutrition sessions are being planned for the winter semester.

The Houlton Hodgdon SAD 29/70 Adult Education instructional staff met on February 5, 2009. As part of that meeting, staff gathered for a photo.

Bernadette Farrar teaches Language Arts classes and serves as a morning open learning center instructor. She also serves as Assistant Director for the program.

Bill Fisher is the instructor for the Aroostook County Jail. He also serves as an evening open learning center instructor.

Nason Graham is an evening open learning center instructor.

Freda Iwulski is an ESL tutor and basic math skills class instructor.

Stephanie Jacobs is an evening learning center instructor and NMCC Math tutor.

Sarah Lovejoy teaches FDP's (Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages), Algebra Prep, and STAR(Student Achievement in Reading) classes. She also serves as a morning open learning center instructor and NMCC Math tutor.

Debbie Melvin is an evening open learning center instructor.

Otis Smith serves as a basic math skills class instructor. He is also director of the Houlton Hodgdon SAD 29/70 Adult Education Program.

Sharon Smith is an evening open learning center instructor. Sharon also serves as an English tutor and makeup exam proctor for NMCC students.

Dave Rowe is an evening open learning center instructor.

Open Learning Center hours for the Winter 2009 Semester are 8-11 a.m. and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. The open learning center provides learners an opportunity to work on basic skills, high school diploma completion, and GED test preparation.
